INTERVIEW WITH RENEE IN THE OXIFF NEWSLETTER

Published by dale_curtis on

What did you want to achieve when you set out to make One Note At A Time?

I wanted to know how the legendary music of New Orleans had been affected by the devastating floods following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Was there anything that surprised you?

I was surprised by the openness, kindness, resilience, commitment and vulnerability of those who took part.

How long did it take to shoot the film and what were the main challenges you faced?

It took four years to shoot the film. We filmed between jobs, whenever we could afford the time and money. Funding was a challenge from day one. There were many more. Filming over this extended period with numerous cameras and cameramen, meant the vast amount of footage needed the genius brain of our Post Production Supervisor, Chris Stott, to get us on track for the edit, and keep us there. There would be no film without him.

What is next for the film and yourself?

We are thrilled because the film has been invited to screen during the Nottingham International Film Festival on 7th October at 4pm at the Showcase Cinema De Lux. It’s also screening on October 24th as part of Germany’s biggest music festival, Enjoy. We look forward to the 2018 release of the film, when it will be available to audiences worldwide.

I’m developing three films, one is another New Orleans documentary, one is an animated film, and one is a thriller.

Is there any advice you can give to anyone looking to make a documentary?

Commit to making the film and the ‘how’ will take care of itself. Bring your post production supervisor on early, have at least one great Executive Producer and join Bectu.
